Statement from the Forest Landowners Association on the U.S.–EU Trade Framework Announcement

The Forest Landowners Association is encouraged by today’s announcement of a framework for a trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, particularly item 10 of the joint statement. This provision marks an important step toward recognizing that America’s forests and family forest landowners are not drivers of deforestation. By explicitly acknowledging the sustainability of U.S. forestry practices, item 10 helps ensure that U.S. forestry products remain competitive in global markets while supporting responsible forest management.

FLA views the recognition as critical for private forest landowners, whose careful stewardship provides essential environmental benefits—including clean air, clean water, wildlife habitat, and carbon sequestration—while also sustaining rural economies. Protecting market access for these sustainable practices reinforces the long-term viability of family-owned forests and strengthens U.S. competitiveness internationally. FLA thanks the Trump Administration for its commitment to defending market access for America’s family-owned forestry businesses.
