Forest Policy Institute
Shaping the Next Generation of Forestry Leaders
Forest Policy Institute – Developing career-ready forestry graduates by providing forestry students experiences beyond the classroom in a 2-day program in Washington, DC, focused on forest policy, public speaking, and networking. Forest Policy Institute students engage with policy professionals in federal agencies, Congress, and trade associations learning about the intersection of policy, conservation, and the ownership and management of private working forests.
Introducing Forestry Students to Policy
In conjunction with the Forest Landowners Association’s Winter Board meeting, the Forest Landowners Foundation (FLF) hosts the forest policy institute designed to introduce forestry students to public policy and how it impacts various aspects of forest ownership and management as well as how landscape-level conservation initiatives intertwine with forestry issues.
The pilot program was launched in February 2019 with 5 students and has expanded each year, when feasible.
Students meet with federal agency leaders, relevant congressional committee chairmen, and leading conservation organizations or trade associations.
“Policy development and impacts are areas of natural resources that are not as commonly discussed in typical undergraduate programs. However, this is arguably one of the most important aspects of land and forest resource management long term. I am honored to have been selected by my university to attend the Forest Policy Institute to learn first-hand from a variety of policy professionals.”
Real World Experience
Students selected for the Forest Policy Institute get the rare opportunity to make connections with private forest landowners from across the nation, hear their concerns, and directly see how policy affects forest management.
